About 175 volunteers from Owasso and surrounding areas gave their time to a dozen charities at the 5th Annual Owasso Evening of Charity on Thursday at Owasso Mid-High School. Participation exceeded last year's numbers, which resulted in 48 pints of blood donated and multiple projects completed.
"It is absolutely amazing what a group of volunteers can accomplish in just two hours," said Linda Kile, event organizer "Owasso truly is a community of compassion and charity." One of the largest projects was filling new backpacks with school supplies for Owasso Community Resources. Both youth and adults worked to assemble 390 backpacks/tote bags for grades K-5 and another 175 for grades 6-12. Other charitable projects completed were: Little Lighthouse - 14 bibs sewn and six dozen timers made; Diana's Angel Project - 23 patterns for infant outfits were cut out, plus 73 blankets; Cystic Fibrosis Foundation - 66 napkins made for a benefit dinner; St. Francis Pediatrics - 120 Christmas ornaments completed; YANA - 40 lap blankets made; Project Linus - 40 quilts sewn; United Way - 1,100 mailers labeled and Blue Star Mothers - 193 cards made for soldiers serving overseas. A large number of race bibs were pinned for Multiple Sclerosis and hats were knitted for cancer patients on behalf of American Cancer Society.Anyone interested in helping with next year's event may email owassovolunteers@sbcglobal.net.
