OCR will take the filled backpacks to schools on Friday.

Owasso Community Resources has coordinated its annual back-to-school drive in an effort to assist students with backpacks filled with the needed supplies to begin the school year. Supplies for more than 860 backpacks have been prepared, though not enough backpacks have been received.

Jeanette North, OCR executive director, said many supplies are being placed in grocery bags that will later be placed in backpacks as they are donated.

To donate a backpack or support the back-to-school drive call OCR at 272-4969.

Once all the supplies are prepared, backpacks will be delivered on Friday to the school for distribution.

OWASSO - In less than a month, children will be returning to the classroom. Several groups have been working to help many students who cannot afford essential supplies Owasso students return to school on Aug. 22.

In advance of the beginning of a new school year, Owasso Community Resources and New Heights Church have scheduled back-to-school events.

Filling backpacks
Owasso Community Resources is enlisting volunteers to help pack more than 800 backpacks with school supplies from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31 and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 1 at the First Presbyterian Church, across from McAlister's Deli on 129th East Avenue. Medical care offered
New Heights Church will offer its yearly all-day Back-To-School Medical Missions on Wednesday, Aug. 1.

Last year, more than 800 people received free haircuts, health and vision screening while more than 400 students received school supplies.

This year, Pediatric Eye Associates and Family Eye Care at 9450 N. Garnett Rd., suite 110, will provide vision screening for students who need glasses, but are unable to afford them. Dr. Lanita Thomas at Thomas Eye Care and Denise Johnson, OD, will also be providing assistance with glasses.

New Heights Church is also providing students with school supplies and hair cuts to help them have a successful start to the school year. In the evening on Aug. 1, the Good Samaritan Health Services will be at the church with required vaccinations. Good Samaritan asks that if you need vaccinations, you bring the required paperwork.

Sales tax holiday weekend

Following passage legislation, retailers across the state will have a sales tax holiday Aug. 3-5. During the weekend the sale of certain clothing and shoes priced less than $100 will be exempt from sales tax.

Back-to-school health fair
The Back to School Health and Hygiene Fair will be from 1 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 17 at the Owasso Library, 103 W. Broadway.

The fair is free for any Owasso or Collinsville student in kindergarten through 12th grade who may need assistance with immunizations, dental check, hair cuts or gift cards for new clothes/shoes/school supplies.
