Summertime is almost over for children in Owasso. Many begin registering for school this week while students at the Owasso Mid-High School and High School fill out their class forms next week.
In anticipation of the coming school year, Owasso Community Resources is trying to help out students with school supplies. Jeanette North, OCR executive director, has enlisted the help of Arvest Bank, Owasso School Superintendent Dr. Clark Ogilvie and the Owasso Ministerial Alliance.Despite Owasso's appearance of prosperity, upwards of 18 percent of students qualify for the lunch subsidies. Depending on the elementary school, between 4- to 18-percent of Owasso's students need help with school supplies, according to Ogilvie. For several years, OCR has taken the lead by organizing a back-to-school drive to assist these students.OCR has set a goal of filling 1,200 backpacks full of the necessary items including paper, pencils, rulers and notebooks. Anyone desiring to donate can write a check to OCR for $35 to outfit an Owasso student with supplies. To donate, call OCR at 272-4969.North wants to encourage parents to take their children shopping and allow them to fill a backpack for a fellow student. It's a great idea - students helping students.OCR tends to go unnoticed until there is a serious need in the community. It works behind the scenes helping families and children with its limited resources.During the Thanksgiving season, OCR helps provide families with a festive holiday meal. At Christmas time it makes it possible for children, who otherwise wouldn't get a present, to receive Christmas presents through its Angel Tree program.OCR needs the community's help. Owasso students need your assistance. Getting a student ready for their first day of class can make all the difference in how they do the rest of the year.
