Owasso may soon have a transit system to serve residents.
Pelivan Transit has received a $120,000 grant to begin service in Owasso. It is one of three grants provided in the state this year, according to Jeanette North, Owasso Community Resources executive director. An informational meeting is set for 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 27 in the Bailey Education Foundation room at Bailey Medical Center, 10502 N. 110th E. Ave. Owasso residents participated in a public meeting on April 20 to discuss the possible transit system. North said the second stage of the process is for those interested in supporting the system to meet with Debbie McGlasson, Pelivan Transit director, to discuss how and when this program will be implemented and the sources of match funds."The service is projected to begin on Oct. 1, 2007, therefore we need to proceed quickly in order to provide this most valuable service to our elderly needing a ride to their doctors and minimum waged workers transportation to their jobs and all other individual and group transportation needs in Owasso," North said.Cost for acquiring the two ADA six-passenger mini vans would be $66,200, with grant funding for $54,946 and a local match of $11,254 required.Fares for those under 60 would be $2 one way in the city and $3 for rural routes, two miles outside city limits. For those over 60 the cost could be $1.75 one way in the city and $2.50 one way on rural routes. A rate of 50 cents per mile will be charged for variable distances, such as a trip to a Tulsa doctor's office. There would also be a rate available for an airport/bus shuttle, with a 24-hour reservation, and those using the service for road-to-work would pay $1.75 one way no matter the rider's age. We serve people of all ages from a grade school student being transported from school to an after-school program to an elderly or disabled person needing to visit the doctor or shop, according to a Pelivan fact sheet. For more information call OCR at 272-4969.
